The Challenge

AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, was grappling with significant data quality problems in their Fonteva/Salesforce association management system. A previous data migration had introduced structural issues that compounded over time, resulting in duplicate records, inconsistent field mappings, and unreliable KPI calculations. Their Tableau reporting environment had grown organically to accommodate these issues, with data preparation workflows in Tableau Data Prep that processed over 17 million records — far more than necessary — and took six hours to refresh. The BI team spent more time troubleshooting data discrepancies than delivering insights to stakeholders.

Our Approach

CorrDyn conducted a thorough audit of AVIXA’s data pipeline from source to dashboard. We identified that the bulk of the processing overhead came from compensating for upstream data quality issues rather than actual analytical complexity. Instead of patching the existing Tableau Data Prep workflows, we replaced them entirely with optimized in-database views that handled cleansing, deduplication, and transformation at the source. We consolidated scattered field mappings and KPI definitions into a single governed layer, ensuring that every report drew from the same consistent definitions. We then updated the existing Tableau reports to connect to the new views and trained AVIXA’s BI team on maintaining and extending the system independently.

The Results

The pipeline refresh time dropped from six hours to twenty minutes — a 94% reduction — by eliminating unnecessary record processing and moving transformations closer to the data source. The record set was reduced from 17 million to 2 million by removing duplicates and historical artifacts that had accumulated from the original migration. AVIXA’s BI team regained confidence in their reporting and the ability to respond quickly to stakeholder requests, with a maintainable architecture they could extend without external support.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Our Tableau dashboards take hours to refresh and the data quality is unreliable — what is going wrong?
Usually the problem is upstream, not in Tableau itself. AVIXA had Tableau Data Prep workflows processing 17 million records when only 2 million were needed — the bloat came from duplicate records and structural issues introduced by a previous Salesforce data migration. Fixing the root cause at the source eliminated 88% of processing overhead and cut refresh from 6 hours to 20 minutes.
How do you optimize a data pipeline without rebuilding everything from scratch?
We audit from source to dashboard to find where the real bottleneck is. For AVIXA, we replaced Tableau Data Prep workflows with optimized in-database SQL views that handle cleansing, deduplication, and transformation at the source. The Tableau reports still work — they just connect to cleaner, faster views. The BI team maintains the SQL views themselves without needing dedicated data engineers.
Why hire CorrDyn for a pipeline optimization instead of handling it internally?
Internal BI teams are often too close to the problem. AVIXA had been patching Tableau Data Prep for years without realizing the root cause was upstream data quality from a botched migration. CorrDyn brings a diagnostic approach — we audit first, identify root causes, then fix them. We also designed the new architecture so AVIXA could maintain it independently, with training and documentation included.
