Power BI

BI & Analytics

Power BI is the most cost-effective BI option for organizations already in the Microsoft ecosystem. The key is governing your business logic upstream in dbt.

We deploy Power BI for cost-conscious teams on Microsoft infrastructure, keeping transformation logic in dbt and using Power BI for what it does best: presentation and distribution.

Power BI

Power BI occupies a specific niche in the BI market and fills it well. For organizations embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem, with data in SQL Server, infrastructure on Azure, collaboration in Microsoft 365, and security managed through Entra ID (formerly Active Directory), Power BI integrates with all of these natively. No other BI tool offers the same depth of Microsoft integration.

How We Use Power BI

Proven approaches from real client engagements.

01Where Power BI Fits

The licensing model is Power BI's strongest advantage. Organizations with Microsoft 365 E5 licenses already have Power BI Pro included. For these organizations, Power BI is effectively free for the BI layer, with costs only at the Premium capacity tier for larger deployments. This makes it the lowest-friction BI tool for Microsoft shops.

For a DTC e-commerce brand, we built a Power BI deployment that unified Shopify, Amazon, and subscription data into a single view. The implementation included SKU-level profitability analysis across channels and marketing attribution across Google, Meta, and Amazon Ads. The client's IT leadership had standardized on Microsoft infrastructure, making Power BI the natural choice for their reporting layer. We built the business logic in dbt and used Power BI for presentation.

02How We Configure Power BI

DAX is Power BI's calculation language, and it is powerful for presentation-layer work. Our best-practice approach keeps the heavy business logic upstream in dbt — version-controlled and auditable — and uses DAX for the lightweight calculations it is well suited to, so your metric definitions live in one governed place rather than spread across .pbix files. This keeps a single transformation layer in dbt and lets Power BI focus on what it does best.

Power BI's Fabric integration continues to mature alongside the well-established Power BI Service. Teams adopting Fabric early can phase it in while keeping their reporting on the proven Power BI Service experience. Compared to Tableau, the two are close to feature parity for most reporting use cases, with each suited to different surrounding stacks.

03Who Should Choose Power BI

Power BI is the right choice if your organization already runs on Microsoft infrastructure and licensing cost is a primary constraint. It does the job for most reporting use cases, and the price is hard to beat if you are already paying for Microsoft 365.

Power BI is at its best inside the Microsoft ecosystem, and it sits comfortably alongside the rest of the modern BI landscape, each tool playing to its surrounding stack. Omni leans into dbt-native workflows and AI-assisted analytics. Tableau emphasizes visual exploration. Looker integrates tightly with GCP. For embedded analytics in customer-facing products, Omni is purpose-built. We help you place Power BI where it fits best within that mix.

Frequently Asked
Questions

When should we use Power BI instead of Tableau or Looker?
Power BI is the pragmatic choice for organizations already in the Microsoft ecosystem, especially those with Microsoft 365 E5 licenses where Power BI Pro is included. It integrates natively with Azure, SQL Server, Entra ID, and Microsoft 365. For teams not committed to Microsoft infrastructure, it is worth weighing Power BI alongside Tableau, Looker, or Omni to match the tool to your stack.
Can CorrDyn migrate us from Looker Studio to Power BI?
Yes. We have migrated teams from Looker Studio to Power BI, typically when an organization standardizes on Microsoft infrastructure and wants their BI tool within that ecosystem. The migration involves rebuilding reports and moving transformation logic into dbt so the Power BI layer stays focused on presentation.
How does Power BI work with dbt?
We build the transformation layer in dbt and connect Power BI to the clean, modeled tables. This keeps business logic version-controlled and auditable. We minimize DAX — any presentation-layer calculations stay simple and are never the source of truth for metrics.
What kind of dashboards do you build in Power BI?
SKU-level profitability analysis, multi-channel marketing attribution, sales pipeline reporting, financial consolidation, and executive KPI dashboards. We keep the business logic in dbt and use Power BI for the presentation layer.
